Using the optical rotation characteristics of NP type liquid crystal, when the light passes through the LCD without power, it becomes polarized light after passing through the first layer of polarizer. When the polarized light passes through the interior of the LCD, it is affected by the spiral arrangement of liquid crystal molecules, and the polarization direction of the light rotates 90 degrees °， The direction of the polarizer is exactly the same as that of the other layer, and the light passes smoothly. When we apply an electric field to the LCD, the twisted structure of NP nematic liquid crystal molecules will be destroyed, the molecular distribution will be distorted and arranged vertically, the optical rotation characteristics of the liquid crystal will disappear, the transmitted light will still propagate along the long axis (i.e. optical axis), without birefringence, and the polarization plane will not change, so the light will be blocked by the upper polarizer, and the dark state display will be obtained.
