Difference between TFT LCD direct drive and HDMI drive

Date:2023-08-01

TFT LCD direct drive and HDMI drive are two different drive mode, and mainly differ in signal transmission way, image quality and requirements for hardware.

TFT LCD direct drive refers to directly transmit the image signal to the LCD screen by using the LCD built-in driver circuit to display the image on the screen. This method is usually used for small size LCD screens, such as mobile devices or small monitors. The requirements for hardware are low because the LCD built-in driver circuit is relatively simple. Under direct drive mode the image quality and resolution are lower, so the performance of color and contrast are not as good as that of HDMI drive mode.

HDMI drive is a digital signal transmission mode by transmitting the image signals from a computer or other devices to the LCD screen through HDMI cables, and then using the LCD built-in decoder to convert the signal into an image displaying on the screen. This mode is typically used for large LCD screens, such as televisions or desktop monitors. Because the HDMI drive can support high resolution and high-quality images, it can provide better image quality and better color performance.

However, for HDMI drive mode, higher hardware requirements is a must, such as graphics card, CPU, memory, etc. In a word, there are own advantages and disadvantages of TFT LCD direct drive and HDMI drive. The different choice of drive mode depends on the specific application scenarios and requirements.
