Can EMI shielding be added to LCD screens

Date:2024-07-17

LCD screens themselves usually do not generate a significant amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI) because their operating voltage is low and they mainly use DC power supply. However, LCD screens often work together with components such as backlight systems, driver circuits, and control boards, which may generate or be affected by EMI. Therefore, EMI shielding of LCD screens and their peripheral components is beneficial, with the main objectives including:

Protect LCD screen: Prevent the electronic drive circuit of the LCD screen from external electromagnetic interference, which may affect the display performance.

Preventing interference with other devices: Some parts of the LCD screen components, such as power circuits, may generate electromagnetic interference, and EMI shielding can reduce the potential impact of this interference on other sensitive electronic devices.

Improving overall EMC performance of the system: In complex electronic systems that include LCD screens, improving overall EMC performance may require EMI shielding of the LCD screen and its components.

Compliance with regulatory requirements: Certain application areas or markets may have strict regulatory  requirements for EMI, and EMI shielding can help meet these requirements.

The EMI shielding of LCD screens can be achieved through the following methods:

Use shielding materials: Add a metal shielding layer, such as copper foil or aluminum foil, to the frame or back panel of the LCD screen.

EMI shielding tape: Special EMI shielding tape is used, which usually contains metal components and can be attached to the edges of LCD screens or backlight modules.

Shielding cover: For control boards or other electronic components of LCD screens, metal shielding covers can be used to reduce EMI.

Filter: Use a filter on the power input or signal lines of the LCD screen to reduce electromagnetic interference propagated through these lines. Optimization design: Improve circuit design and layout to reduce the generation and propagation of EMI.

Grounding: Ensure proper grounding of the LCD screen components to provide a low impedance path for EMI to flow to the ground.

When designing EMI shielding for LCD screens, it is necessary to consider the balance between shielding effectiveness and factors such as cost, weight, and design complexity. For most consumer electronics products, special EMI shielding measures may not be necessary, but for high demand professional or medical equipment, EMI shielding may be necessary.
