We know that there are many parameters that affect the display effect of LCD screens, such as brightness, resolution, viewing angle, and so on. Today, we will focus on the contrast of LCD displays, which is one of the important parameters that affect the display effect of LCDs.
What is the contrast ratio of an LCD screen?
Contrast is actually the ratio of the brightest and darkest areas displayed on the screen. High contrast means that the displayed image has brighter colors and better color reproduction. Because contrast is the difference between the brightest and darkest areas of a screen, it can be seen that when we see the white area of the screen being brighter and the black area being darker, it indicates that the contrast of the screen is higher. Under appropriate backlight brightness conditions, the higher the contrast parameter, the richer the color hierarchy of the screen image, and the clearer and more vivid the display effect. Our current mainstream LCD screens have a contrast ratio between 400:1 and 600:1, with higher ratios reaching up to 1000:1. Of course, different usage scenarios will also have different contrast requirements. The contrast ratio of commercial screens, home appliances, and other devices we use in our daily lives is around 400:1, which can basically meet the requirements for displaying color clarity. The contrast requirement for medical equipment display screens is relatively high, usually around 1000:1. Just like the machine screen we use for B-ultrasound in our daily lives, although its colors are not many and relatively simple, it is mainly observed and analyzed through the depth and darkness between black, white, and gray. A higher contrast on the screen will make the light and dark areas of the medical screen more distinct, and also make the image in the dark areas clearer and more layered with light and dark.
How to improve the contrast of LCD screens through technological means?
1、 Backlight brightness. There are many technical means to adjust the contrast of LCD screens, and the simplest and most direct method is to adjust the backlight brightness of the LCD screen. The larger the adjustable range of brightness for LCD backlight, the higher the contrast. But this method also consumes more electricity and shortens the backlight life of the screen. Therefore, in order to achieve high contrast, it is not necessarily better to have a brighter backlight. A reasonable brightness range is needed for adjustment. 2、 Screen voltage. We all know that voltage is an important factor affecting the display effect of a screen, and contrast is also affected by the screen voltage. High voltage can cause ghosting on the screen, while low voltage can result in dull and dull colors on the screen. Therefore, optimizing the voltage scheme of the screen is an economically effective method to improve the contrast of LCD screens. 3、 Selection of LCD screen panel. To achieve better screen contrast, it is also important to pay attention to the selection of LCD screen panels. The display contrast of TN panel is relatively low, while IPS panel and VA panel have better contrast and higher cost. Therefore, in the selection of LCD panels, we cannot blindly pursue high contrast. We should consider the application field and usage scenario of the product comprehensively to choose the appropriate contrast range for the screen, and then select the suitable LCD panel.
